The Bailey Oratorical Speech Contest, one of Juniata’s oldest traditions, is a formal speaking competition that garners high levels of student participation. Whether students are in the humanities or the sciences, those from all POEs are encouraged to participate. Each year students are presented the topic question prior to Christmas break. The actual competition takes place in February. The Bailey is a well-attended event that both students and local townspeople don’t miss. Judges for the event are recruited from many areas of life, from professors to doctors to state representatives. Prize money is awarded to the winners. The money was made available by a donation from Colonel Sedgeley Thornbury.
