Scholarships
Juniata Scholarships
All scholarships that the student holds will apply during the study abroad period. In addition, students are also encouraged to apply for scholarships offered through the CIE, and in addition students are guided to outside scholarships where appropriate or available. Juniata supports study abroad through the following specific scholarships:
Bliss-Karns-Schwemmlein Scholarship for Study Abroad
- This scholarship is established in honor of Max Bliss, Angus Karns and Arnold Schwemmlein. It is an endowed merit scholarship and its award shall be made to a full-time Juniata student who is eligible for, and who plans, a full-academic year of study in France, Germany, Russia or Spain in a Juniata sponsored program in which English is not the language of instruction.
- Ordinarily, one scholarship will be made to a student for the junior year.
- Because study abroad usually entails somewhat greater costs for the student, this merit scholarship award is to supplement existing grant and aid funds that the student would normally be awarded—not to substitute for such other financial assistance.
- Application deadline: January 26, 2009.
- A selection committee consisting of the President of the College, the Dean of International Programs and Dr. Michael Henderson shall choose the student.
- The committee shall base its selection on a review of the following:
- The candidate’s record of academic achievement at Juniata;
- The candidate’s demonstrated potential for future academic excellence;
- Letters of recommendation from two faculty members;
- A letter from the candidate outlining on how he/she might promote language study and international programs upon returning for the senior year at Juniata
Jane P. Carpenter Endowed Scholarship for International Study in France
- This endowed scholarship is established by Jane P. Carpenter, who was a former French professor at Juniata. The Jane P. Carpenter Endowed Scholarship for International Study in France shall be awarded to a student or students who show exceptional promise in the study of French.
- It is intended that this scholarship provide funds beyond what is normally provided by the College for study abroad during the junior year.
- Upon the recommendation of the Chair of World Languages and Cultures, the main French professor, and the Dean of the Center for International Education, the recipient or recipients will be selected by the Provost. Preference shall be given to students who are studying for a full year in France.
- Upon return from France, the student or students will be expected to be actively involved in promoting the study of French on Juniata’s campus and abroad.
- Application deadline: January 26, 2009.
Nyce Scholarship for Study in Latin America
- Provides a variable stipend for students who are going to study for a year, a semester or in a summer program.
- Applicants are required to submit an essay explaining what they will do upon return from Latin America to help to educate students at Juniata about issues relating to Latin America and also help to promote interest in study abroad in Latin America.
- Fulfillment of the commitment must be completed during the senior year.
- Application deadline: February 9, 2009.
Philbrook W. Smith History Scholarship
Established by friends and family, this endowment honors Dr. Philbrook W. Smith, a long time professor of history at Juniata College. Dr. Smith taught at Juniata from 1955 until his retirement in 1998. He was the Charles A. Dana Professor of History and the chairperson of the history department for many years. Dr. Smith and his wife, Mary Ann (Bailey) Smith '55 spent much of their spare time traveling. Dr. Smith believed that the experience of travel in other countries in itself IS study; therefore, this endowment will be awarded to a student traveling abroad to provide assistance with the cost of travel. Preference shall be given to students with a POE in history. Selection shall be made by the Provost in consultation with the History Department.
To apply for this scholarship, submit an essay addressing the philosophy of this scholarship, where you are applying to and why you are interested in going to the particular program abroad specifically as it applies to your major and why you deserve this scholarship. Deadline is January 26, 2009.
Rinehart-Darkatsch Scholarship for International Study in Education
- Established in honor of the parents of Mrs. Darkartsch (J. Aldus ’24 and Mildred Hale ’23 Rinehart), and other members of the Rinehart and Hale families who graduated from Juniata College.
- Income from this scholarship is to be awarded at the end of the sophomore year to a promising student for study abroad during the junior year in the field of education, with a preference given to elementary education majors.
- Applicants are selected with regard to financial need, GPA, and an evaluation of the student’s practicum experience.
- The applicant must submit an essay explaining how his/her education program is enhanced through study abroad and what he/she will do upon return to share understanding of education principles and methods in the host country.
- Selection shall be made by the Provost in consultation with the Department of Education.
- Fulfillment of the commitment must be completed during the senior year.
